Richard A Jones was born on the Shaffer ranch on the Merced River, March 4 1893. The oldest son of George C. and May L.(Shaffer) Jones. He attended local schools and graduated from Merced High School. In 1921 he established the Merced Cleaning and Dyeing Works located at 1401 16th St.

In 1935 he became a member of the City Council and in 1938 was elected Mayor of Merced. He was Mayor until 1942. Mr. Jones held various civic positions in his life. He was President of the Central Valley League of Municipalities, VP of Chamber of Commerce, Director of County Fair Association, Park Commissioner, Director of Fish and Game, and Airport Commissioner.

Mr. Jones was married to Anna Lahn Wallrath of Antioch. They had one daughter, Mary Anna.
Mr. Jones passed away in Jan. 6,1946 of a heart attack while duck hunting in the Sandy Mush Area at the age of 52.
