Mrs. Fanny B. Baxter, Le Grand Pioneer, Dies In Her 94th Year.
Le Grand - Funeral services will be held Saturday in the Mission Chapel of the Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced for Mrs. Fanny B. Baxter, 94, a pioneer resident of the Le Grand area.
Mrs. Baxter died this morning in Fresno following a short illness. She will be buried in the Plainsburg Cemetery.
A resident of Le Grand since 1888, Mrs. Baxter was the widow of the late George Baxter, Le Grand rancher. She was born in La Grange in 1864, 12 years after her parents came west from Missouri in a covered wagon.
Mrs. Baxter attended elementary school at the Mc Swain School. She was a member of the Le Grand Methodist Church.
She enjoyed good health until shortly before her death. She maintained her household in Le Grand and regularly walked two blocks every day to receive her mail. She was honored last year at La Grand Community Day.
When Mrs. Baxter's parents first moved to Merced County, they purchased land for $1.50 an acre. Mrs. Baxter remembered the early ranching days in the county and the construction of the Santa Fe Railroad near Le Grand.
She leaves a daughter Mrs. Mary B. Judy of Fresno; two sons, Glenn Baxter of Le Grand, and Alvin Baxter of Merced; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Quinly of Modesto.
The Rev. Phillip C. Greer will officiate at the funeral services.
