Services Held For Former Resident
Funeral services were conducted at the Whitehurst Funeral Chapel yesterday,
Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Mathias Becker, of Oakland, a former Los
Banos resident. Rev. H. F. Beaver officiated. Interment was made in Los Banos
cemetery.
Mr. Becker died Tuesday a.m. at the Oakland home of his daughter, Dorothy, wife
of Julian Smith Jr. He had been ill about three weeks. He was the fourth child
in the family of six, of which only one now survives, Bernard Becker, of
Norwalk, Calif.
Mr. Becker came to this country at an early age and after a short time in
Pennsylvania moved to Colorado and then to California, where he located in the
Santa Clara valley. He came to the Los Banos area in 1886 and operated a large
farm here until 1915, when he moved to Oakland to work in the ship yards during
the time of the World war.
Shortly after he came to Los Banos he became married to Miss Augusta Salu, who
passed away twelve years ago.
He is survived by eight children, Mrs. Eunice Burnette of Folsom City; Adolph
Becker of Willowbrook; Mathias Jr., Folsom City; Mrs. Eugenie Woodman of Los
Banos; Harold Becker of Mariposa; Mrs. Muriel Deane of Midpines, Mariposa
county; Howard Becker of Berkeley; and Mrs. Dorothy Smith, also of Berkeley.
