DOUBLE FUNERAL WAS HELD MONDAY
George H. Carter, who had been an invalid for many years, passed away at the
County Hospital late last Friday afternoon, and several hours later his
step-father, David L. Heffner, passed away in the same institution, his death
resulting from hemorrhages after a brief illness.
Double funeral services were held in the Welch & griffin chapel Monday, with the
Rev. Dennis B. Rickard officiating, and interment was in the Winton cemetery.
Mr. Carter was born in Genoa, Nevada, sixty-seven years ago, but had resided in
California since boyhood.
During his long residence in Merced he was engaged in teaming anf for several
years held a contract for transporting the mail to and from the trains and the
local Postoffice.
Surviving relatives are his widow, Susie Carter, of this city, his mother, Mrs.
Annie L. Heffner; a brother, J.E. Carter of Tipton; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah
Carey of Stockton and Mrs. Ora Pebley and Mrs. May Wisdom of Atwater, and a
step-sister, Mrs. Clarice Trindade of San Francisco.
Mr. Heffner, who was aged seventy-four years, was a native of Dayton, Ohio. He
came to Merced about forty-five years ago to work at his trade as painter and
paper-hanger and had resided here continuously since.
His surviving relatives are those mentioned above.
