Pearl Diffin
Le Grand -- Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Ivers and
Alcorn Chapel in Merced for Mrs. Pearl May Diffin, 96, who died Sunday at a
Merced convalescent home.
She was the daughter of Merced-Mariposa settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lewis, an
attended Pioneer School at Lingard and Athlone Normal school where she completed
her teaching degree.
Her long teaching career included positions at Westside schools, Cunningham
School on the Cunningham Ranch, and the Savana School.
In 1908 she married Merced County Auditor, William H. Cook, who preceded her in
death and in 1922 married Ervin Diffin who died in 1943.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Howard Blakely of the Le Grand United
Methodist Church of which Mrs. Diffin was a life-long member. She first joined
the church in 1896 when it was located in Plainsburg and maintained her
membership when it was moved to Le Grand.
Mrs. Diffin was a member of the California Teacher's Association, Rebekah Lodge
of Chowchilla and the Le Grand Historical Society.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Buelah Franklin and Alice Cowell, both of
Fresno and two step-sons, Mervin and LeRoy Diffin, both of Sacramento.
Burial will be in the Turner-Helm Cemetery.
