PIONEER WOMAN CALLED BY DEATH
Mrs. Mary Maher, a highly respected pioneer resident of Merced county, passed
away in Oakland on Friday afternoon of last week following an illness of
several months. Mrs. Maher was a native of Ireland and was aged 66 years. She
came to Merced in the early seventies and had resided in this county almost
continuously until about a year ago, when , following the death of her
husband, the late Michael Maher, she moved to Oakland to make her home with
her daughter. She was a true Christian woman, a loving wife and mother and
devoted friend, and was respected and esteemed by all who knew her.
She leaves two daughters, Mrs. J. D. McCarthy of Oakland and Mrs. E. W.
Thiercof of Los Banos; five sons, John, James, Thomas, William and Vincent
Maher, and a sister, Mrs. Susan baker of Oakland. The remains were brought to
this city Saturday evening, and the funeral took place from the Catholic
Church at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning. Interment was made in the family plot
in the Catholic cemetery.
