Death of F. G. Poor.
F. G. Poor, a well known farmer of Merced county and respected citizen died at
his home twelve miles east of Merced on the first instant from a gunshot wound
inflicted by himself with suicidal intent. Mr. Poor was a native of Kentucky,
71 years of age and was one of the pioneers of the county. At the time he
committed the deed he was perhaps laboring under a temporary aberration of
mind for he was in poor health, financially embarrassed and had family cares
which were too much for him to bear. He was a courteous and affable gentleman
and endeavored to be up right and honorable with his fellow men. He was
married twice and left a large family of children. Several years ago he
visited his old home in Kentucky from which he had been absent for forty-five
years and when he returned to Merced he said that he was sorry he went for he
did not see but one person he knew, hence his visit was not a pleasant one.
The funeral was held at his late residence last Sunday and the interment was
in the Merced cemetery under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity.
