Death of David E. Smith

David E. Smith, a well known citizen of Merced, died at his residence in this city on Sunday last after a lingering illness from consumption. The deceased was a native of Wayne county, Missouri, and was born December 27, 1827 being over 67 years of age at the time of his death. He came to California at an early day, and for years was engaged in mining in different parts of the State, which finally injured his health, and he traveled to Oregon, the Sandwich Islands and other places in search of health for a few years. He finally settled in Mariposa county and in 1864 was married to Mrs. Campbell who survives him.

While in Mariposa county he engaged in farming and stock raising until 1878, when he removed
to Merced, where he resided up to the time of his death. For several years prior to his death he
had charge of the court house grounds, and he kept them in excellent condition, being faithful
to his trust. Mr. Smith was a steady, honest and industrious man, attending strictly to his own
business and never speaking detrimental of anyone and he will be missed for some years to
come.

The funeral took place Monday afternoon from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the pastor J.D. Lewis, preaching the funeral.
