Merced Sun-Star, Sept 9, 1935 (Front page and page 3) –
Mrs. Marian Vincent SOUZA, 80, a resident of Merced 22 years, died at her home, 448 Twenty-second yesterday. She was a native of the Azores islands and came to California in 1871 and settled at Sonora. The following year she was married to the late Joseph M. SOUZA and the couple moved to Cathay Valley. Seven daughters and three sons were born to the couple.
Those who survived their parents are Mrs. Mary T. PRAIRIE of Merced and Mrs. Marian C. SILVEIRA of Santa Cruz, T.M. SOUZA and John M. SOUZA of Merced. Six grandchildren survive. They are Mrs. Anna FAIRBANKS of Merced, Miss Madeline SOUZA at San Francisco State College, Chester SOUZA, Lloyd SOUZA and Robert SOUZA of Merced and Marvin E. NANCE at the Pacific Military Academy of Culver City. A great grandson, Donald SOUZA of Merced, also survives.
A rosary service will be held at the Welch and Griffin Chapel tonight at 8 and funeral services will be held at the chapel Tuesday at 9:30, thence to Our Lady of Mercy Church where mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Father Edward Cronin at 10. Mrs. SOUZA will be buried at Calvary Cemetery
