DEATH OF A PIONEER. Last Sunday evening, Sept. 3rd, Mr. Eli Thurman, an highly esteemed citizen of this place, departed this life at the ripe age of sixty years, eleven months and seventeen days, Mr. Thurman was a native of Tennessee, and came to California in 1849. After living in California for about two years he retraced the perilous journey across the plains, and in December 1851, landed safely at home in his native State. The following year, however, he again turned his face westward, and  the summer of 1852  found him, together with his family once more on the shores of the Golden State, where he has ever since resided, and was destined to end his days. In the daily walks of life Mr. Thurman might well be taken as an example to pattern after unassuming, social, courteous and kind, he was respected and honored by all who knew him. He leaves behind a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, who have the sympathy of a large circle of friends, The funeral took place from his late residence, corner of 18th and J streets, Monday afternoon and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and acquaintances.
