John H. Wisdom of Atwater Dies Early Wednesday
John Henry Wisdom, 67, Atwater, died in Mercy hospital early Wednesday morning after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held at Ivers and Alcorn Mission chapel Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev. Lawrence Hawley officiating. Burial will be in the Winton cemetery.
John Wisdom, son of the late John M. and Frances S. Wisdom, pioneer residents of Yosemite Colony, Merced County, was born in Yolo County July 2, 1876.
After coming to this community, he was engaged in freighting to Yosemite Valley for many years. He hauled materials used in building Camp Curry. Later Mr. Wisdom was employed by Merced city during the time John Czerney was superintendent of streets. In 1918 the family moved to Atwater when John worked for Merced county district No. 3 until 1941 when illness forced him to retire.
In 1898 he was married to Miss Laura May Carter of Merced. To this union was born 10 children.
Surviving relatives include Mrs. Wisdom, eight children, two brothers, four sisters and 12 grandchildren. Richard and Harold Wisdom preceded their father in death.
Surviving children are Mrs. Mildred Jensen, Winton; Mrs. Genevieve Curry, Hayward; Mrs. Ora Gurr and Herbert Wisdom of Merced; Otis and Lee Wisdom of San Jose; Wallace Wisdom of Sacramento; Marvin Wisdom of Livingston.
His brothers are Alanzo C. Wisdom of Atwater and Lee Wisdom of Oakland. The four sisters are Mrs. Leatres Wightman and Mrs. Bell Burns of Stockton; Mrs. Ella Hansen of San Jose and Mrs. Rose Gowan of Santa Rosa.
